Barbarika

Bravest man in the war of Mahabharata

Many people often think that who was the greatest warrior in the epic Mahabharata.
It can not be denied that every warrior in the battlefield was superior from others but one man who got the title of the bravest soldier was Barbarika and surprisingly he even did not participated in the war, so how did he got the title of the bravest man despite of the warriors like Karna, Arjuna, Bhishma and Krishna?
Barbarika was the grandson of one of the Pandava Bheema and son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi, daughter of daitya moor, a yadava king. Barbarika was originally a yaksh, who was reborn as a man. He held his principle of fighting against the winning side.

When the soldiers from all over the Aryavrat (known as India is present time) started gathering in Kurukshetra (war zone), Barbarika also came from south with only 3 arrows in his quiver. Lord Krishna asked every warrior that according to them how long would the war of Mahabharata would last, every warrior replied 15 days to 1 months. Krishna went disguised as a Brahmin to Barbarik and asked the same question, Barbarika replied that he could finish the war in few seconds.
Krishna was amazed and he asked him that how he can kill such great warriors in few seconds, he told Krishna that his each arrow holds a different divine powers which were given by ashtadeva(gods), he said that his one arrow can mark all the enemies he wanted to kill, his second arrow could mark everyone he wanted to save and his third arrow can kill everyone he marked and at last arrow will come back to his quiver. Hearing this Krishna challenged him to show case his skill and pierce all the leaves of the peepal tree under which they were standing, Barbarika accepted the challenge and shot the arrow towards tree, after piercing all the leaves the arrow started hovering over Krishna's leg, because under his leg there was the last leaf which he has hidden to test Barbarika. Seeing this Krishna was amazed and tensed because he knew that one day Pandvas will win over Kauravas and because of his principle Barbarika would never let that happen. So he asked Barbarika for one donation, as he was disguised as a Brahmin Barbarika agreed to his request and promised him to give anything he wanted. Krishna asked Barbarika for his head and without thinking for a while Barbarika cut off his head and gave it to Krishna with a last wish of witnessing the war of Mahabharata. Krishna accepted his request and placed his head at the top of the hill from where every corner of kurukshetra was visible.
Chopped off head of Barbarika is worshiped in present times and he is known as Khatu Shyam Ji Maharaj.
